Overstone Park Rockets U10s v Horton House Blues U10s

Chris Malton

The league decider!

What a great game of cricket.

These 2 sides have proved exceptionally strong all season and possess packed line ups of both County and District players.

Overstone won the toss and backed themselves batting first.
Connor and Luca have been our regular opening pair and knew they would be up against some strong Horton bowling. That proved to be the case with Luca 5 from 11 out just the once and Connor 12 from 13 getting us off to a good start. Connor in particular played well showing a wide range of shots including the most beautiful cover drive for 4 off the final ball of their 4 overs.
Next up were Dexter and Milo who found the going tough against good straight bowling from Horton - Katie Fidler in particular was outstanding for Horton. Dexter scored 6 from 15 including a lovely straight 4 but was out twice while Milo was solid scoring 2 from his 9 balls but not getting out. At the halfway point of our innings we were in decent shape but still needed some runs from our last 2 pairs.
Ali and Harry were next in and between them lost just one wicket Harry being bowled by the impressive Katie. Ali was strong all around the wicket playing a Captains innings scoring 22 off 13 with 3 fours and Harry did well scoring 12 from 11 with 2 fours. Their running was again impressive and highlighted how to put pressure on the opposition. Adding Net 35 was just what we needed going into the last pair.
Teddy 16 from 14 with 3 fours and Rajan 5 from 10 were both battling beautifully until the last 3 balls when each was bowled once. That meant we had lost 6 wickets our most this season but against a very strong bowling attack that was still a very good effort. Could we defend 301?
Horton came out all guns blazing and had scored over 20 in the first 2 overs including 4 fours! How would everyone respond? Up step Teddy with the ball to get a crucial wicket to settle the nerves somewhat. Teddy ended up with 1-4 off 2 overs a fine effort.
Horton were in a strong position after 4 overs but they had their 2 strongest batsmen having batted.
Luca and Harry bowled in the next 4 overs and were outstanding. Harry 1-7 off 3 and Luca 0-4 off 2. We also got run outs from Connor and Milo so had really got on top during this pair. Dexter bowled next and was typically accurate 0-12 and Milo bowled well taking 2-6 off 2 the most successful bowler on show on the night.
As the last pair came to bat the task seemed too much but you can never tell in cricket but we needn't have worried with good overs from Rajan, Milo and Harry finishing the innings. Teddy was disappointed not to bowl the last over and deserved a go giving his fine spell earlier in the evening but it was a shrewd decision from Ali who was concerned about the rain and brought on Harry to get the over completed quickly. Horton ended up on 297-7 and Overstone 336-6 a 39 run victory.
All the boys have played well this year and it was nice to see them retain the League trophy that was won by Overstone last year.
Thx to all involved
